Yao Hill Tribe Painting

One of the six major hill tribes in North Thailand, Yao or Mien dwellers can also be found in China, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand.

This painting was commonly displayed during Daoist religious ceremonies.  It was part of a complete set of 17 paintings that was hung on the ancestral altar.  When not in use, they were carefully stored.  Sometimes they were rolled inside a piece of cloth and stored in a cylindrical rattan basket next to the altar.
