Does the painting look like it is hanging from its cord? Conservators certainly made it look that way!
The cord was too weak to support the entire weight of the painting. To avoid adding stress to the paper support and cord, conservators had to find a safe and aesthetically pleasing way to hang the painting, while keeping its original structure intact.
Supported by an acrylic rod, held by custom-made looped hinges attached to the back, the painting was held against the wall by screws fastened to the acrylic rod. This gives the illusion that the painting is hanging from the cord. Through creative thinking, both conservation and curatorial purposes were met.
