Tampan or ceremonial cloth

Late 19th to early 20th century

Lampung, Indonesia

Cotton, supplementary weft technique

Traditionally used by families in Lampung, the rich illustrations on this tampan reflect the strong traditions of kinship, social life and the religious beliefs of the people of South Sumatra.

Symbols of mythical animals with ancestral figures on a ship signified rites of passage and a change in a person’s social or spiritual state.
